CDC welcomes the Victorian Government's announcement of a Sustainable Data Centre Action Plan to guide future data centre development. The framework marks another step in Australia's evolving approach to digital infrastructure policy.
Today’s announcement follows a broader national conversation about the infrastructure needed to support Australia's digital economy, mission-critical systems, cyber security resilience and sovereign data requirements.
CDC Chief Executive Officer Greg Boorer said governments across Australia were increasingly recognising that data centres are critical infrastructure and that clear frameworks are essential to providing certainty for investment while building community confidence.
"The discussion about data centres is no longer simply a planning conversation. It is fundamentally a conversation about Australia's digital future and the infrastructure required to support it," Mr Boorer said.
"Over the past 12 months we have seen an important national conversation emerge about the infrastructure needed to support Australia's future productivity, prosperity and technological capability.
"That conversation has been reflected through federal initiatives, national discussions about digital infrastructure and increasingly through state-based frameworks that provide greater clarity around how projects are assessed and developed.
"We welcome Victoria providing greater certainty around future data centre development.
"As one of Australia's most important data centre regions, the policy settings adopted by Victoria have an important role to play in supporting investment, innovation and Australia's long-term digital capability.
"Importantly, communities want confidence that the organisations developing and operating critical infrastructure are responsible contributors to the places where they invest.
"Clear frameworks help provide that confidence by establishing transparent expectations for industry, creating certainty for investors and helping communities better understand how projects will be assessed.
"Responsible data centre operators take their responsibilities to customers, communities and the broader economy seriously. Strong frameworks help reinforce those expectations and recognise the importance of trust alongside investment.
"Ultimately, good policy should provide certainty for investors, clarity for governments and confidence for communities."
